2008 Barbera
Appellation: Lodi
Vineyard: The grapes come from the Lewis Vineyard located on the Mokelumne River in the Lodi AVA. The vines are approximately 15 years old and head pruned.
Vintage: For a second straight year, rainfall has been less than average, combined with a severe heavy frost in March it affected the size of the vintage. The lower yield was reflected in the intensity of flavors developed in the grapes. The harvest was moderately early but the fruit came in at full physiological ripeness.
Composition: 92% Barbera blended with 8% Syrah
Vinification: Grapes were hand sorted, gently crushed and fermented in one ton containers. After pressing, the wine was transferred to a mixture of neutral French and American oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: Medium garnet in color, this Barbera has aromas of blackberries and bing cherries with a slight hint of earthiness. Blackberry flavors dominate and then evolve with overtones of chocolate. Upfront this wine has bold acidity followed by a roundness in the mouth feel on the back palate and a clean lingering finish. Pairs nicely with bold tomato sauced dishes.
